Participation with a movement restriction: towards tailor-made training and coaching

Children with developmental movement disorders encounter difficulties with the learning of daily tasks. For these children, participation in society and sports activities is not trivial. In this project we aim to improve participation in sports of these children through tailor-made training and coaching. The study group constitutes children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). These are the two most common developmental movement disorders which together account for a prevalence of approximately 7 per 1000 births. The central question in this project is how, given the specific movement abilities of these children, motor skills can best be learned and how these learned skills can be best applied in practice.

The research project consists of three complementary components: two research packages (Work Packages) and a so called Valorisation and Development Lab (in Dutch: VOL). Based on recent scientific findings, Work Package 1 will study the effectiveness of implicit and explicit learning for football and boccia (see: Femke van Abswoude). Work package 2 examines the environmental variables in children with CP and DCD playing sport, and comprehends (the improvement of) competency in sport coaches and physical activity teachers (see: Sandra van Cappellen). Experiences and results from Work Packages 1 and 2 will be aligned. The valorisation of knowledge and communication to the work field will take place through the Valorisation and Development Lab (see: Eralt Boers). This research project will lead to, amongst other things, a manual for training and coaching of the target group, a training for (potential) users and directions for policy of sport clubs, sport associations and sport academies.
